When law enforcement looks to catch a thief, they look for patterns. Our system will help you do the exact same thing.
Our Abandoned Cart report will show you all customers who have gone up to the kiosk, placed an item in their shopping cart and then, as described, abandoned it. These customers had the intention of buying and for whatever reason didn’t complete the purchase. Once is an occurrence, twice is a trend. If you have a theft problem in your market and the same person appears in this report multiple times - as shown in this picture - rest assured, this person is your thief.

Several years ago, a now loyal Three Square Market client said “I use ___(insert competitor name)___ and I have asked them repeatedly for this but they haven’t delivered. I want the screen to turn green when they pay and a big RED X when they don’t”. Within four days we had the Red X on his first 32M store and now several years later, this operator now has over 25 stores with Three Square Market.
How does it work? When a customer scans their product and presses to pay, the transaction is ONLY complete when the screen turns green. When not completed properly, what pictured is shown. Just like what customers see if they swing and miss on the TV game show “The Family Feud”, it is as clear as day whether a customer paid or not.
More patterns. Once you establish you have an issue and use this report, next you need to use your camera system to zero in, not watch for hours. What do we mean?
The key with any camera system is placement. Most camera systems come with four units and a DVR. We also HIGHLY recommend you have a large display screen that shows everyone who enters your store “you are being watched”. In a four camera system, two cameras cover the entire store, one specifically is focused on the kiosk and the last on the busiest section of your store or your best selling products.
While it is not always available or convenient, a time frame of your business week should be dedicated to watching your cameras live and using a voice module like Alexa to say “hello, how can I help you?” WHY? Because letting people know they are being watched will stop more theft than anything else.
If you are having a theft issue, the easiest way to zero in on a thief is to look at your kiosk sales report, match it against when your cameras are recording, and look to where there is activity in your store and no transaction. If there is activity and someone hasn’t purchased, this means someone walked in your store and looked around and didn’t use the kiosk. Over 75% of theft in markets occurs when no one else is in the market.
If we were playing the Family Fued and the question was “Name the top five concerns of putting in a self checkout store?” THE #1 answer would hands-down be THEFT. And legitimately so.
Theft needs to be addressed right up front and without buy in from the location to enforce it as a crime, it is not a location to go in to. A crime? Yes. You need to set the tone that has the location support otherwise the only theft will be from the operators bank account.
Post signage on the kiosk, such as pictured above, and in the store, that clearly articulates that there is no exception: Theft will NOT be tolerated. Then, take action when it occurs.
Certainly. There is other technology available that is far more retail friendly to catch and deter theft. However, in a market where the average transaction is $3.62, is that technology too pricey? Well, there are advances coming out.
Three Square Market is partnering with an experienced retail loss prevention expert to use RFID in the smallest form to detect how many products someone is leaving with vs. how many products were paid for. While in early development, 32M expect to roll out this technology in Q1, 2019.
How are we doing this? Remember, 32M was born out of our jail technology business where we work with law enforcement daily. Combined with our loss prevention experts, our law enforcement resources are developing a cost effective solution that will change the self service industry.
